Bank of America keeps 22 branches in San Jose, Santa Clara County, 4th of the 50 CA cities in this guide, out of 686 statewide. CA consumers have filed 37,169 CFPB complaints against it, 6,539 of them since January 2025. One customer's experience, mine, set beside what the bank measurably looks like in San Jose.

Bank of America's footprint in San Jose

Bank of America has 22 branches on file with the FDIC in San Jose in Santa Clara County. That is 3.2% of the 686 BoA branches across CA, spread over 39 CA counties in total, and it ranks San Jose 4th of the 50 CA cities covered in this guide. They sit across 15 different ZIP codes, so "your" branch and the next-nearest one are not necessarily the same errand. One of them is limited-service (drive-through or detached), which is unusual: only 16 of the 1,354 BoA branches across these four states are anything other than full-service brick-and-mortar.

At 22 locations, in-person service is realistic here: notarisation, cashier's cheques, medallion signature guarantees and disputed-transaction paperwork can all be done locally, and if one branch will not resolve something you can simply walk into another. The same is true just outside San Jose: San Francisco (27 branches), Oakland (6 branches), Fremont (3 branches), Santa Clara (3 branches); so a refusal here is rarely the end of the in-person route.

Branch counts are Bank of America locations on file with the FDIC (certificate 3510) under each city label; New York City and its boroughs are counted by FDIC county. Postal city labels do not always match municipal boundaries, so treat a zero as "none on file under this city label".

How long Bank of America has been in San Jose

Bank of America's San Jose footprint is not all one vintage: the oldest office on file dates to 1927, the newest to 2025, 98 years apart. The early end of that range is inherited banking history at 99 S 4th St (an establishment date follows an office through mergers) rather than Bank of America's own tenure in San Jose.

Those branches are spread over ZIP codes 95111, 95112, 95116, 95120 and 95121 and 3 more. Queues, staffing and how much a manager will authorise are not uniform across San Jose: 99 S 4th St, 1245 Lincoln Ave and 2049 Camden Ave are separate offices with separate managers, so a refusal at one of them is that counter's answer and not San Jose's.

Practically, a San Jose footprint assembled between 1927 and 2025 is an uneven one: an office on the books since 1927 at 99 S 4th St and one added in 2025 rarely run to the same layout, staffing or counter service, even under one brand and one sign.

Across San Jose's 15 branch ZIP codes, 95123 holds 3, 95122 holds 2, 95124 holds 2, 95128 holds 2 and 95129 holds 2, with 10 further ZIP codes holding the rest. 95123 is the one to try first in San Jose: 3 offices there means a second counter the same afternoon if the first says no, where the 9 single-branch ZIPs give you one attempt and then a written escalation.

Office by office, the FDIC establishment years in San Jose read 1927, 1948, 1954, 1957, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1968, and 14 more. 1981 accounts for 2 of them on its own, an arrival in one transaction, not a build-out.

On the FDIC record in San Jose alongside 99 S 4th St: 1245 Lincoln Ave, 2049 Camden Ave and 2300 Alum Rock Ave. Name the street in a complaint: "1245 Lincoln Ave" survives being passed between departments in a way "my San Jose branch" does not.

Establishment dates are the FDIC's date of record for each banking office. That date follows the office through mergers and acquisitions, so an early date means a bank branch has operated at that address since then, not that Bank of America itself has been there that long.

What I observed (fees experience)

In my experience, the fees were relentless. From my perspective, the bank found every possible excuse to chip away at the balance. Maintenance fees waived only on conditions I had to actively manage. Wire fees on the higher end of the market. ATM-network fees in places where the partner network had thinned. Customer service offered, in my view, zero structural solutions.

The CA complaint file is led by "Mortgage" issues (9,553 complaints), which is where fee disputes land. If you want the published fee schedule and the waiver thresholds rather than my experience of them, the fee breakdown for San Jose is the better page.

What CA customers report, and where San Jose sits in it

San Jose's 22 branches are 3.2% of the 686 Bank of America branches in CA, the 4th-largest share of the 50 CA cities in this guide. Against that footprint, CA consumers have filed 37,169 CFPB complaints against Bank of America, 12,490 since January 2023, 6,539 since January 2025, or about 54 lifetime filings for every branch the bank runs in the state.

"Mortgage" leads the CA file at 9,553, then "Checking or savings account" at 9,385; the most-reported issue is "Managing an account" at 6,117. None is tagged to San Jose (the CFPB records by state), but a filing of your own, with dates and amounts attached, is what turns one account's problem into a pattern.

Whether 22 is a lot depends on what it sits beside: the nearest CA footprints in this guide are San Diego with 25 and Sacramento with 14.

The file carries no ZIP or city field, so what locates a San Jose filing is what you type into it. The San Jose branches on the FDIC record are 99 S 4th St, 1245 Lincoln Ave, 2049 Camden Ave and 2300 Alum Rock Ave, and 2 more; name the one you banked at, with its ZIP (95111, 95112, 95116, 95120 and 95121 and 3 more), in the narrative box.

Escalating from San Jose, in order

Each step produces the evidence the next one expects, so the order matters more than the volume. From San Jose, with 22 branches to work with, it runs like this:

  1. Use a second branch before you escalate anywhere. San Jose has 22 branches across Santa Clara County, so if one refuses to resolve something, another is the cheapest next step and costs you nothing but the trip.
  2. Get it in writing with the bank first: a secure message is dated and quotable, a phone call is not. Name the office in it (99 S 4th St is the oldest on the FDIC record in San Jose); "my branch" is not a reference anyone can look up. No San Jose office entered the FDIC record between 1927 and 1948.
  3. File with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, free, public, answered on the record, and it joins 37,169 filings already logged from CA.
  4. File in parallel with California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI), which supervises banks operating in San Jose and carries weight a federal queue does not.
  5. Chasing a dormant balance rather than a dispute? Different office: California State Controller: Unclaimed Property.
