Biotech companies apply biology, chemistry, and engineering to develop products such as therapeutics, diagnostics, vaccines, research tools, and bioengineered materials. Many are built around discovering and advancing drug candidates through preclinical work and structured clinical trials toward regulatory approval, a path that is long, capital-intensive, and uncertain. Others sell laboratory instruments, reagents, genetic sequencing, contract research and manufacturing services, or agricultural and industrial bioproducts. Revenue may come from product sales, licensing and milestone payments from partners, service contracts, or, for clinical-stage firms, primarily from raised capital before any product reaches the market.

Value in biotech is tightly bound to scientific validity, intellectual property, and regulatory progress. A drug developer's prospects hinge on trial outcomes, the breadth and durability of its patents, and approval decisions by health regulators. Because development can span many years with no revenue, companies often rely on partnerships with larger firms, grants, and investor funding, and they face binary risk where a single trial result can reshape the business. Manufacturing biological products demands specialized facilities and strict quality controls. Even after approval, commercial success depends on reimbursement, competition from alternative treatments, and the strength of the supporting clinical evidence.
