Bank of America keeps 25 branches in San Diego, San Diego County, 3rd of the 50 CA cities in this guide, out of 686 statewide. CA consumers have filed 37,169 CFPB complaints against it, 6,539 of them since January 2025. One customer's experience, mine, set beside what the bank measurably looks like in San Diego.
Bank of America's footprint in San Diego
Bank of America has 25 branches on file with the FDIC in San Diego in San Diego County. That is 3.6% of the 686 BoA branches across CA, spread over 39 CA counties in total, and it ranks San Diego 3rd of the 50 CA cities covered in this guide. They sit across 20 different ZIP codes, so "your" branch and the next-nearest one are not necessarily the same errand. 2 of them are limited-service (drive-through or detached), which is unusual: only 16 of the 1,354 BoA branches across these four states are anything other than full-service brick-and-mortar.
At 25 locations, in-person service is realistic here: notarisation, cashier's cheques, medallion signature guarantees and disputed-transaction paperwork can all be done locally, and if one branch will not resolve something you can simply walk into another. The same is true just outside San Diego: Chula Vista (5 branches), Escondido (2 branches), Oceanside (1 branch); so a refusal here is rarely the end of the in-person route.

Branch counts are Bank of America locations on file with the FDIC (certificate 3510) under each city label; New York City and its boroughs are counted by FDIC county. Postal city labels do not always match municipal boundaries, so treat a zero as "none on file under this city label".
How long Bank of America has been in San Diego
Bank of America's San Diego footprint is not all one vintage: the oldest office on file dates to 1904, the newest to 2021, 117 years apart. The early end of that range is inherited banking history at 3101 University Ave (an establishment date follows an office through mergers) rather than Bank of America's own tenure in San Diego.
Those branches are spread over ZIP codes 92101, 92103, 92104, 92105 and 92106 and 3 more. Queues, staffing and how much a manager will authorise are not uniform across San Diego: 3101 University Ave, 4166 El Cajon Blvd and 737 University Ave are separate offices with separate managers, so a refusal at one of them is that counter's answer and not San Diego's.
Practically, a San Diego footprint assembled between 1904 and 2021 is an uneven one: an office on the books since 1904 at 3101 University Ave and one added in 2021 rarely run to the same layout, staffing or counter service, even under one brand and one sign.
Across San Diego's 20 branch ZIP codes, 92130 holds 3, 92101 holds 2, 92128 holds 2, 92154 holds 2 and 92103 holds one, with 15 further ZIP codes holding the rest. 92130 is the one to try first in San Diego: 3 offices there means a second counter the same afternoon if the first says no, where the 16 single-branch ZIPs give you one attempt and then a written escalation.
Office by office, the FDIC establishment years in San Diego read 1904, 1927, 1927, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1961, and 17 more. 2007 accounts for 3 of them on its own, an arrival in one transaction, not a build-out.
On the FDIC record in San Diego alongside 3101 University Ave: 4166 El Cajon Blvd, 737 University Ave and 1275 Rosecrans St. Name the street in a complaint: "4166 El Cajon Blvd" survives being passed between departments in a way "my San Diego branch" does not.

Establishment dates are the FDIC's date of record for each banking office. That date follows the office through mergers and acquisitions, so an early date means a bank branch has operated at that address since then, not that Bank of America itself has been there that long.
What I observed (security and password resets)
I have been forced, in my own account experience, to change my password multiple times per week. On some weeks the prompt returned several times in the same week. I was not given a clear explanation, and I could not identify any real security incident on my end. To me this is friction, not security. Modern fintech banks bind devices, default to hardware-key 2FA, and do anomaly detection in the background. What I experienced felt like the cost of that calibration was passed back to me.
If repeated lock-outs leave you unable to bank digitally in San Diego, the 25 branches on file locally are the practical fallback for verifying your identity in person.

What CA customers report, and where San Diego sits in it
San Diego's 25 branches are 3.6% of the 686 Bank of America branches in CA, the 3rd-largest share of the 50 CA cities in this guide. Against that footprint, CA consumers have filed 37,169 CFPB complaints against Bank of America, 12,490 since January 2023, 6,539 since January 2025, or about 54 lifetime filings for every branch the bank runs in the state.
"Mortgage" leads the CA file at 9,553, then "Checking or savings account" at 9,385; the most-reported issue is "Managing an account" at 6,117. None is tagged to San Diego (the CFPB records by state), but a filing of your own, with dates and amounts attached, is what turns one account's problem into a pattern.
Whether 25 is a lot depends on what it sits beside: the nearest CA footprints in this guide are San Francisco with 27 and San Jose with 22.
The file carries no ZIP or city field, so what locates a San Diego filing is what you type into it. The San Diego branches on the FDIC record are 3101 University Ave, 4166 El Cajon Blvd, 737 University Ave and 1275 Rosecrans St, and 2 more; name the one you banked at, with its ZIP (92101, 92103, 92104, 92105 and 92106 and 3 more), in the narrative box.

Subscribe →Escalating from San Diego, in order
Each step produces the evidence the next one expects, so the order matters more than the volume. From San Diego, with 25 branches to work with, it runs like this:
- Use a second branch before you escalate anywhere. San Diego has 25 branches across San Diego County, so if one refuses to resolve something, another is the cheapest next step and costs you nothing but the trip.
- Get it in writing with the bank first: a secure message is dated and quotable, a phone call is not. Name the office in it (3101 University Ave is the oldest on the FDIC record in San Diego); "my branch" is not a reference anyone can look up. No San Diego office entered the FDIC record between 1927 and 1955.
- File with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, free, public, answered on the record, and it joins 37,169 filings already logged from CA.
- File in parallel with California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI), which supervises banks operating in San Diego and carries weight a federal queue does not.
- Chasing a dormant balance rather than a dispute? Different office: California State Controller: Unclaimed Property.
