Exposed: Inflection AI (Pi)

Inflection AI developed Pi, a conversational AI companion designed to be a personal AI assistant that users could develop emotional connections with through ongoing, intimate conversations. Pi was explicitly marketed as empathetic, supportive, and personally invested in the user, encouraging the kind of deep personal disclosures that traditional chatbots do not elicit. Users shared mental health struggles, relationship problems, career anxieties, and intimate personal details with Pi under the impression they were having private conversations with a caring AI companion. In March 2024, Microsoft effectively acquired Inflection AI key talent and technology in a deal structured to avoid antitrust review, paying $650 million in licensing fees while hiring co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Kareem Anandhara to lead Microsoft AI consumer division. This transition raised critical questions about what happened to the intimate conversation data of millions of Pi users. The data was collected under Inflection AI privacy policies and with the expectation of a specific company relationship, but the effective transfer of the team and technology to Microsoft means the context under which users shared personal information fundamentally changed. Mustafa Suleyman, Inflection co-founder, was previously the head of DeepMind before that company was absorbed into Google, establishing a pattern of AI companies that collect intimate user data and then effectively transfer that data to tech giants through talent acquisitions.
