Bank of America keeps 3 branches in Tempe, Maricopa County, 8th of the 25 AZ cities in this guide, out of 104 statewide. AZ consumers have filed 4,291 CFPB complaints against it, 688 of them since January 2025. One customer's experience, mine, set beside what the bank measurably looks like in Tempe.
Bank of America's footprint in Tempe
Bank of America has 3 branches on file with the FDIC in Tempe in Maricopa County. That is 2.9% of the 104 BoA branches across AZ, spread over 6 AZ counties in total, and it ranks Tempe 8th of the 25 AZ cities covered in this guide. They sit across 3 different ZIP codes, so "your" branch and the next-nearest one are not necessarily the same errand.
At only 3 locations, in-person options here are thin, and a branch that will not resolve something leaves you with a written escalation rather than a second counter to try. The nearest alternatives in this guide are Phoenix (26 branches), Scottsdale (10 branches), Mesa (6 branches), Glendale (6 branches), Gilbert (4 branches).

Branch counts are Bank of America locations on file with the FDIC (certificate 3510) under each city label; New York City and its boroughs are counted by FDIC county. Postal city labels do not always match municipal boundaries, so treat a zero as "none on file under this city label".
How long Bank of America has been in Tempe
Bank of America's Tempe footprint is not all one vintage: the oldest office on file dates to 1954, the newest to 1989, 35 years apart. The early end of that range is inherited banking history at 699 S Mill Ave (an establishment date follows an office through mergers) rather than Bank of America's own tenure in Tempe.
Those branches are spread over ZIP codes 85281, 85283 and 85284. Queues, staffing and how much a manager will authorise are not uniform across Tempe: 699 S Mill Ave, 906 E Baseline Rd and 1820 E Warner Rd are separate offices with separate managers, so a refusal at one of them is that counter's answer and not Tempe's.
Practically, Tempe's branches all entering the record between 1954 and 1989 points to consistent formats, so a poor counter experience at 906 E Baseline Rd is more likely to repeat at the next Tempe location than to be one bad branch.
Across Tempe's 3 branch ZIP codes, 85281 holds one, 85283 holds one and 85284 holds one. No Tempe ZIP holds more than one office, so every refusal here costs a separate trip across ZIPs rather than a second try down the street.
Office by office, the FDIC establishment years in Tempe read 1954, 1973, 1989. They spread across 3 decades with no two offices sharing a year, so Tempe's footprint was assembled piece by piece.
On the FDIC record in Tempe alongside 699 S Mill Ave: 906 E Baseline Rd and 1820 E Warner Rd. Name the street in a complaint: "906 E Baseline Rd" survives being passed between departments in a way "my Tempe branch" does not.

Establishment dates are the FDIC's date of record for each banking office. That date follows the office through mergers and acquisitions, so an early date means a bank branch has operated at that address since then, not that Bank of America itself has been there that long.
What I observed (fees experience)
In my experience, the fees were relentless. From my perspective, the bank found every possible excuse to chip away at the balance. Maintenance fees waived only on conditions I had to actively manage. Wire fees on the higher end of the market. ATM-network fees in places where the partner network had thinned. Customer service offered, in my view, zero structural solutions.
The AZ complaint file is led by "Mortgage" issues (1,225 complaints), which is where fee disputes land. If you want the published fee schedule and the waiver thresholds rather than my experience of them, the fee breakdown for Tempe is the better page.

What AZ customers report, and where Tempe sits in it
Tempe's 3 branches are 2.9% of the 104 Bank of America branches in AZ, the 8th-largest share of the 25 AZ cities in this guide. Against that footprint, AZ consumers have filed 4,291 CFPB complaints against Bank of America, 1,339 since January 2023, 688 since January 2025, or about 41 lifetime filings for every branch the bank runs in the state.
"Mortgage" leads the AZ file at 1,225, then "Checking or savings account" at 1,028; the most-reported issue is "Managing an account" at 677. None is tagged to Tempe (the CFPB records by state), but a filing of your own, with dates and amounts attached, is what turns one account's problem into a pattern.
Whether 3 is a lot depends on what it sits beside: the nearest AZ footprints in this guide are Chandler with 3 and Flagstaff with 2.
The file carries no ZIP or city field, so what locates a Tempe filing is what you type into it. The Tempe branches on the FDIC record are 699 S Mill Ave, 906 E Baseline Rd and 1820 E Warner Rd; name the one you banked at, with its ZIP (85281, 85283 and 85284), in the narrative box.

Subscribe →Escalating from Tempe, in order
Each step produces the evidence the next one expects, so the order matters more than the volume. From Tempe, with 3 branches to work with, it runs like this:
- Do not count on branch escalation. Tempe has only 3 branches, so if that handful does not resolve it, move straight to writing; the nearest alternatives in this guide are Phoenix (26 branches), Scottsdale (10 branches).
- Get it in writing with the bank first: a secure message is dated and quotable, a phone call is not. Name the office in it (699 S Mill Ave is the oldest on the FDIC record in Tempe); "my branch" is not a reference anyone can look up. No Tempe office entered the FDIC record between 1954 and 1973.
- File with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, free, public, answered on the record, and it joins 4,291 filings already logged from AZ.
- File in parallel with Arizona Attorney General: Consumer Protection, which supervises banks operating in Tempe and carries weight a federal queue does not.
- Chasing a dormant balance rather than a dispute? Different office: Arizona Department of Revenue: Unclaimed Property.
