Bank of America keeps 4 branches in Staten Island, Richmond County, 8th of the 61 NY cities in this guide, out of 251 statewide. NY consumers have filed 12,190 CFPB complaints against it, 2,465 of them since January 2025. One customer's experience, mine, set beside what the bank measurably looks like in Staten Island.
Bank of America's footprint in Staten Island
Bank of America has 4 branches on file with the FDIC in Staten Island in Richmond County. That is 1.6% of the 251 BoA branches across NY, spread over 20 NY counties in total, and it ranks Staten Island 8th of the 61 NY cities covered in this guide. They sit across 4 different ZIP codes, so "your" branch and the next-nearest one are not necessarily the same errand.
At only 4 locations, in-person options here are thin, and a branch that will not resolve something leaves you with a written escalation rather than a second counter to try. The nearest alternatives in this guide are New York City (120 branches), Brooklyn (32 branches), Queens (24 branches), Bronx (11 branches), Yonkers (4 branches).

Branch counts are Bank of America locations on file with the FDIC (certificate 3510) under each city label; New York City and its boroughs are counted by FDIC county. Postal city labels do not always match municipal boundaries, so treat a zero as "none on file under this city label".
How long Bank of America has been in Staten Island
Bank of America's Staten Island footprint is not all one vintage: the oldest office on file dates to 2006, the newest to 2015, 9 years apart. The early end of that range is inherited banking history at 2196 Forest Ave (an establishment date follows an office through mergers) rather than Bank of America's own tenure in Staten Island.
Those branches are spread over ZIP codes 10303, 10306, 10312 and 10314. Queues, staffing and how much a manager will authorise are not uniform across Staten Island: 2196 Forest Ave, 2820 Hylan Blvd and 3881 Richmond Ave are separate offices with separate managers, so a refusal at one of them is that counter's answer and not Staten Island's.
Practically, Staten Island's branches all entering the record between 2006 and 2015 points to consistent formats, so a poor counter experience at 2820 Hylan Blvd is more likely to repeat at the next Staten Island location than to be one bad branch.
Across Staten Island's 4 branch ZIP codes, 10303 holds one, 10306 holds one, 10312 holds one and 10314 holds one. No Staten Island ZIP holds more than one office, so every refusal here costs a separate trip across ZIPs rather than a second try down the street.
Office by office, the FDIC establishment years in Staten Island read 2006, 2009, 2014, 2015. They spread across 2 decades with no two offices sharing a year, so Staten Island's footprint was assembled piece by piece.
On the FDIC record in Staten Island alongside 2196 Forest Ave: 2820 Hylan Blvd, 3881 Richmond Ave and 2895 Richmond Ave. Name the street in a complaint: "2820 Hylan Blvd" survives being passed between departments in a way "my Staten Island branch" does not.

Establishment dates are the FDIC's date of record for each banking office. That date follows the office through mergers and acquisitions, so an early date means a bank branch has operated at that address since then, not that Bank of America itself has been there that long.
What I observed (rewards program)
This is the section that moved my BoA experience from frustration to genuinely suspicious. In my experience, rewards I expected did not credit to my account. I set up auto-redeem AND manually requested redemptions on multiple occasions. Neither path produced a deposit I could see. I contacted support, followed every step, and from my perspective, nothing reached my account.
Rewards were also central to the CFPB's 2023 enforcement order, which cited Bank of America for withholding credit-card rewards. That is the public-record counterpart to what I describe above. A Staten Island customer who believes rewards did not credit has a documented precedent to reference in a complaint, and 12,190 NY filings already sitting in that database.
My full account, written exactly as I would describe it to a friend, is at /my-banking-story.
What NY customers report, and where Staten Island sits in it
Staten Island's 4 branches are 1.6% of the 251 Bank of America branches in NY, the 8th-largest share of the 61 NY cities in this guide. Against that footprint, NY consumers have filed 12,190 CFPB complaints against Bank of America, 4,454 since January 2023, 2,465 since January 2025, or about 49 lifetime filings for every branch the bank runs in the state.
"Checking or savings account" leads the NY file at 2,825, then "Mortgage" at 2,583; the most-reported issue is "Managing an account" at 1,681. None is tagged to Staten Island (the CFPB records by state), but a filing of your own, with dates and amounts attached, is what turns one account's problem into a pattern.
Whether 4 is a lot depends on what it sits beside: the nearest NY footprints in this guide are Albany with 4 and Yonkers with 4.
The file carries no ZIP or city field, so what locates a Staten Island filing is what you type into it. The Staten Island branches on the FDIC record are 2196 Forest Ave, 2820 Hylan Blvd, 3881 Richmond Ave and 2895 Richmond Ave; name the one you banked at, with its ZIP (10303, 10306, 10312 and 10314), in the narrative box.

Subscribe →Escalating from Staten Island, in order
Each step produces the evidence the next one expects, so the order matters more than the volume. From Staten Island, with 4 branches to work with, it runs like this:
- Do not count on branch escalation. Staten Island has only 4 branches, so if that handful does not resolve it, move straight to writing; the nearest alternatives in this guide are New York City (120 branches), Brooklyn (32 branches).
- Get it in writing with the bank first: a secure message is dated and quotable, a phone call is not. Name the office in it (2196 Forest Ave is the oldest on the FDIC record in Staten Island); "my branch" is not a reference anyone can look up. No Staten Island office entered the FDIC record between 2009 and 2014.
- File with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, free, public, answered on the record, and it joins 12,190 filings already logged from NY.
- File in parallel with New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), which supervises banks operating in Staten Island and carries weight a federal queue does not.
- Chasing a dormant balance rather than a dispute? Different office: NY Office of the State Comptroller, Unclaimed Funds.
