Bank of America keeps 4 branches in Albany, Albany County, 7th of the 61 NY cities in this guide, out of 251 statewide. NY consumers have filed 12,190 CFPB complaints against it, 2,465 of them since January 2025. One customer's experience, mine, set beside what the bank measurably looks like in Albany.

Bank of America's footprint in Albany

Bank of America has 4 branches on file with the FDIC in Albany in Albany County. That is 1.6% of the 251 BoA branches across NY, spread over 20 NY counties in total, and it ranks Albany 7th of the 61 NY cities covered in this guide. They sit across 3 different ZIP codes, so "your" branch and the next-nearest one are not necessarily the same errand. One of them is limited-service (drive-through or detached), which is unusual: only 16 of the 1,354 BoA branches across these four states are anything other than full-service brick-and-mortar.

At only 4 locations, in-person options here are thin, and a branch that will not resolve something leaves you with a written escalation rather than a second counter to try. The nearest alternatives in this guide are Schenectady (2 branches), Troy (1 branch), Saratoga Springs (1 branch).

Branch counts are Bank of America locations on file with the FDIC (certificate 3510) under each city label; New York City and its boroughs are counted by FDIC county. Postal city labels do not always match municipal boundaries, so treat a zero as "none on file under this city label".

How long Bank of America has been in Albany

Bank of America's Albany footprint is not all one vintage: the oldest office on file dates to 1934, the newest to 2009, 75 years apart. The early end of that range is inherited banking history at 900 Central And Colvin Avenues (an establishment date follows an office through mergers) rather than Bank of America's own tenure in Albany.

Those branches are spread over ZIP codes 12205, 12206 and 12208. Queues, staffing and how much a manager will authorise are not uniform across Albany: 900 Central And Colvin Avenues, 133 Wolf Rd and 21 Railroad Ave are separate offices with separate managers, so a refusal at one of them is that counter's answer and not Albany's.

Practically, a Albany footprint assembled between 1934 and 2009 is an uneven one: an office on the books since 1934 at 900 Central And Colvin Avenues and one added in 2009 rarely run to the same layout, staffing or counter service, even under one brand and one sign.

Across Albany's 3 branch ZIP codes, 12205 holds 2, 12206 holds one and 12208 holds one. 12205 is the one to try first in Albany: 2 offices there means a second counter the same afternoon if the first says no, where the 2 single-branch ZIPs give you one attempt and then a written escalation.

Office by office, the FDIC establishment years in Albany read 1934, 1966, 1998, 2009. They spread across 4 decades with no two offices sharing a year, so Albany's footprint was assembled piece by piece.

On the FDIC record in Albany alongside 900 Central And Colvin Avenues: 133 Wolf Rd, 21 Railroad Ave and 33 New Scotland Ave. Name the street in a complaint: "133 Wolf Rd" survives being passed between departments in a way "my Albany branch" does not.

Establishment dates are the FDIC's date of record for each banking office. That date follows the office through mergers and acquisitions, so an early date means a bank branch has operated at that address since then, not that Bank of America itself has been there that long.

What I observed (rewards program)

This is the section that moved my BoA experience from frustration to genuinely suspicious. In my experience, rewards I expected did not credit to my account. I set up auto-redeem AND manually requested redemptions on multiple occasions. Neither path produced a deposit I could see. I contacted support, followed every step, and from my perspective, nothing reached my account.

Rewards were also central to the CFPB's 2023 enforcement order, which cited Bank of America for withholding credit-card rewards. That is the public-record counterpart to what I describe above. A Albany customer who believes rewards did not credit has a documented precedent to reference in a complaint, and 12,190 NY filings already sitting in that database.

What NY customers report, and where Albany sits in it

Albany's 4 branches are 1.6% of the 251 Bank of America branches in NY, the 7th-largest share of the 61 NY cities in this guide. Against that footprint, NY consumers have filed 12,190 CFPB complaints against Bank of America, 4,454 since January 2023, 2,465 since January 2025, or about 49 lifetime filings for every branch the bank runs in the state.

"Checking or savings account" leads the NY file at 2,825, then "Mortgage" at 2,583; the most-reported issue is "Managing an account" at 1,681. None is tagged to Albany (the CFPB records by state), but a filing of your own, with dates and amounts attached, is what turns one account's problem into a pattern.

Whether 4 is a lot depends on what it sits beside: the nearest NY footprints in this guide are Buffalo with 7 and Staten Island with 4.

The file carries no ZIP or city field, so what locates a Albany filing is what you type into it. The Albany branches on the FDIC record are 900 Central And Colvin Avenues, 133 Wolf Rd, 21 Railroad Ave and 33 New Scotland Ave; name the one you banked at, with its ZIP (12205, 12206 and 12208), in the narrative box.

Escalating from Albany, in order

Each step produces the evidence the next one expects, so the order matters more than the volume. From Albany, with 4 branches to work with, it runs like this:

  1. Do not count on branch escalation. Albany has only 4 branches, so if that handful does not resolve it, move straight to writing; the nearest alternatives in this guide are Schenectady (2 branches), Troy (1 branch).
  2. Get it in writing with the bank first: a secure message is dated and quotable, a phone call is not. Name the office in it (900 Central And Colvin Avenues is the oldest on the FDIC record in Albany); "my branch" is not a reference anyone can look up. No Albany office entered the FDIC record between 1934 and 1966.
  3. File with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, free, public, answered on the record, and it joins 12,190 filings already logged from NY.
  4. File in parallel with New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS), which supervises banks operating in Albany and carries weight a federal queue does not.
  5. Chasing a dormant balance rather than a dispute? Different office: NY Office of the State Comptroller, Unclaimed Funds.
