Venmo is a mobile payment platform owned by PayPal with over 90 million active users, primarily used for peer-to-peer payments, splitting bills, and increasingly for merchant transactions. Venmo most distinctive and concerning feature is its social transaction feed, which by default broadcasts payment activity, including the names of both parties and a text description of each transaction, to a public timeline visible to anyone. This social feed has been the subject of sustained privacy criticism because it reveals patterns of who you spend time with, where you eat, what substances you purchase, and who you are in romantic or financial relationships with. Researchers have demonstrated that Venmo public feed can be used to identify drug transactions, track dating relationships, monitor gambling activity, and map social networks. President Biden Venmo account was found by journalists in minutes by tracing friend connections through the public feed. Despite years of criticism, Venmo only changed the default to friends-only in 2021 and the fully private option requires manual configuration. PayPal acquisition of Venmo integrates payment data with PayPal broader financial ecosystem, and the PayPal Honey browser extension adds online shopping surveillance to the data mix. Venmo credit and debit cards extend the payment data collection to physical purchases, creating a comprehensive financial activity map that combines social relationships with spending behavior.
