Teladoc Health is the largest telehealth company in the world, providing virtual medical consultations to over 90 million members through employer health plans, insurance partnerships, and direct consumer access. The company processes enormous volumes of sensitive health data including video consultation recordings, chat transcripts with physicians, prescription requests, mental health therapy sessions through BetterHelp (a Teladoc subsidiary), chronic condition management data, and diagnostic imaging. Teladoc expanded aggressively during the COVID-19 pandemic, acquiring mental health platform BetterHelp and chronic care management company Livongo for a combined $18.5 billion. The BetterHelp acquisition brought significant privacy liability, as BetterHelp was subsequently fined $7.8 million by the FTC for sharing therapy data with advertising platforms. Teladoc platform stores years of patient consultation history, creating longitudinal health profiles that are far more comprehensive than typical medical records because they combine primary care, mental health, dermatology, and chronic disease management data in a single system. The company virtual care model means all interactions are digitally mediated and recorded, eliminating the privacy protections inherent in traditional in-person medical visits where conversations exist only in physician memory and handwritten notes. Internal reports indicate that certain Teladoc staff beyond treating physicians can access patient records for quality assurance, analytics, and platform improvement purposes.
