Autonomous vehicle companies develop systems that let cars, trucks, and other vehicles sense their surroundings and drive with reduced or no human input. The technology combines sensors such as cameras, radar, and lidar with perception software, mapping, and decision-making algorithms that interpret the environment and plan safe maneuvers. The sector includes full self-driving developers, suppliers of individual components and sensors, simulation and testing firms, and operators running commercial services such as robotaxis or automated freight. Safety validation is central, because a system must handle rare and unpredictable road situations reliably before it can operate without a human ready to intervene.

Commercial models range from licensing driver-assistance software to automakers, to operating fleets directly and charging per ride or per delivery. Development is expensive and slow, requiring large amounts of real-world and simulated driving data to train and verify behavior across weather, geography, and traffic conditions. Regulation varies by jurisdiction and shapes where and how vehicles can be tested or deployed, and liability and public trust are practical hurdles alongside the technical ones. Companies often narrow their scope to constrained environments such as highways, fixed routes, or geofenced urban zones where conditions are more predictable and validation is more tractable.
