xAI, founded by Elon Musk, develops Grok, an AI chatbot integrated into the X (formerly Twitter) social media platform. Grok is trained on real-time data from X posts, giving it access to one of the largest corpora of human opinion, conversation, and news commentary. By default, X enabled a setting that shared all user posts with xAI for Grok training without explicit opt-in consent, a decision that drew immediate regulatory scrutiny from the Irish DPC and other European data protection authorities. The integration means that anything posted publicly on X becomes training data for Grok, and users must manually navigate to privacy settings to opt out. Musk has stated xAI's mission is to build AI that understands the universe, but the practical implementation involves harvesting social media data from 600 million monthly active users. Grok generates responses that are intentionally less filtered than competitors, including political commentary and edgy content that raises concerns about misinformation amplification. The company operates the Colossus supercomputer cluster with 100,000+ NVIDIA H100 GPUs, representing one of the largest AI training investments in the world. xAI raised $12 billion and achieved a $50 billion valuation by early 2025.
