Exposed: Worldcoin (World ID / Orb)

Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, aims to create a global digital identity system by scanning the irises of every human on Earth using metallic orb devices deployed in public spaces. The project claims to solve the problem of distinguishing humans from AI bots by creating a unique biometric identity for each person. However, the collection of iris biometric data, one of the most sensitive biometric identifiers, has drawn intense scrutiny from privacy regulators worldwide. Kenya banned Worldcoin operations after citizens complained about coercive data collection practices targeting low-income communities with cryptocurrency incentives. Spain, Portugal, and Germany have also restricted or investigated Worldcoin operations. The iris data is processed into hash representations that Worldcoin claims cannot be reversed, but independent researchers question this assertion and note that the original iris images were retained during early scanning operations. The project represents a fundamental tension between digital identity verification and biometric privacy, essentially asking billions of people to surrender their most unique biological identifier to a private company controlled by AI industry insiders in exchange for a small cryptocurrency payment.
